It seems like a while since I've posted. All has been going relatively smoothly here, with occasional bumps. We had another internet disconnection after a resurgence of protests in another city, but now all is connected again.
One of the assistants at the school has been loaning me books on the history of Myanmar, including one called "Twilight Over Burma: My Life as a Shan Princess." While the writing wasn't the best, the story was certainly interesting, that of a young Austrian woman who marries a Burmese man who turns out to be a Shan prince. It gives an intimate yet outsider's look into the Shan state in Myanmar, right up to the military coup in 1962, where her husband disappears and and the current regime started its reign (which is still going). Now she's loaned me another about more recent turmoil, so we shall see what that one is about.
Todd is well and just returned from doing a community service trip. They went to an orphanage where one of the buildings had been washed out by floods this year. So they (the community service club) are going to do some donations I think to help them rebuild the building and perhaps do a painting activity for it. Hopefully Todd will get some pictures on his blog, but as I'm sure you're aware, it's difficult to do over here!
Today was my first meeting with the kids about the musical I'm doing with the elementary music teacher and high school dance teacher, Annie. It's exciting to finally get started with this, and it should be a fun production to put together, although a lot of work. We'll be doing auditions next week, and then we'll be off and running hopefully. While its not my favorite musical, it's a good one for these kids, and they should get into (in spite of the 1930's depression era setting).
Take care all, and I'll try to find something interesting to post next time. Who knows, maybe I'll even be able to figure out pictures some day.
love, Meghan
