Excursion!

Greetings to all who visit the blog!

I hope all of you are well. Todd and I finally got out of Yangon this weekend! Todd’s assistant Jasmine invited us to visit an orphanage with her that was a ½ hour outside of the city. It was a small orphanage for around 30 children ages 3-5. We gave a donation and made a list of what kind of materials they needed. Todd runs the community service club for the middle school, and he thought it might be a good place to support. We also visited a world war II cemetery, with lots of graves for British, Indian, Myanmar, and Japanese soldiers. It’s interesting to visit and contemplate, all these people who died and were buried so far from home. It’s very nicely kept up also. Last we were taken to see the two white elephants, who are the only white elephants in Myanmar. This was a pretty sad sight, with elephants on a chain so short they can only take one or two steps, under a pavilion with people watching them. I’ve never even liked zoos, and this was infinitely worse. The white elephants looked like the were probably albinos, but I don’t know the history behind them really. Still, all in all we had a nice day with his assistant, made some donations to the orphanage, and got to get outside of the city a bit. Next week Todd’s dad comes to visit, which will also be a trip outside the city, as we plan to visit the golden rock pagoda, a giant golden rock that is perfectly balanced on the edge of a mountain. Stay tuned.

Love, Meghan
